You are not your thoughts

You are not your thoughts…

I have heard this saying a few times lately… but what does that mean and how can we relate/apply not allowing our thoughts to be us.

It’s easier said than done to not listen to your thoughts….

So this is what I have come up with to help people understand how to practice this saying “you are not your thoughts”

Think of your brain as a television, which plays lots of different channels. Those channels which represent your thought patterns.

Channel 1 = Positive thoughts = (Self love/self motivation/dreams/happiness)

Channel 2 = Negative thoughts = (Self doubt/ low esteem/worry/fear)

Channel 3 = Favourite romantic movie = (Love/Relationships)

Channel 4 = Favourite holiday movie = (Holidays past or future)

Channel 5 = The office TV show = (Work life)

Channel 6 = Modern Family = (Family life)

We have many more channels in our mind (TV) but those are the most common things we think about daily.

We play these channels all on repeat sometimes we stay on Channel 2 for TOO LONG or we never watch Channel 1.

Sometimes we never think to try to watch channel 23 which is the Discovery channel…. an educational channel that could inspire us to do something different in our lives or maybe start thinking a bit different about others or even ourselves.

We need to start noticing what channels we are playing in our minds. To help us get to a point to understand that we are not our thoughts…they don’t have to consume us and make us feel bad… they can help us and make us feel AMAZING as long as we keep them on those good channels.

Then there is the ultimate, which is to completely turn OFF the TV. Switching off all the channels so you allow your mind to quiet down completely.

In yoga this is meditation, quieting down the mind, not listening to our thoughts and just being still.

Challenging for most people to approach but if you think about… watching TV all day long is not great for you.

EXERCISE

Do a little exercise and rate 1-5 on each channel on how much time you think you are listening “watching” each channel (1 low – 5 high).

For me today

Channel 1 = Positive thoughts = (Self love/self motivation/dreams/happiness) = 5

Channel 2 = Negative thoughts = (Self doubt/ low esteem/worry/fear) = 3

Channel 3 = Favourite romantic movie = (Love/Relationships) = 3

Channel 4 = Favourite holiday movie = (Holidays past or future) = 1

Channel 5 = The office TV show = (Work life) = 5

Channel 6 = Modern Family = (Family life) = 4

Overview
So the majority of my thoughts are about my work and I am thinking happy thoughts about my overall life. I am thinking about family life as I have family visiting right now. Balancing time with Tony while there is a lot going on with the holiday season and family time. Future holiday planning is not a priority right now and I feeling worried at the moment.

Where would I like my rating to be with each channel

Channel 1 = Positive thoughts = (Self love/self motivation/dreams/happiness) = 5

Channel 2 = Negative thoughts = (Self doubt/ low esteem/worry/fear) = 0

Channel 3 = Favourite romantic movie = (Love/Relationships) = 4

Channel 4 = Favourite holiday movie = (Holidays past or future) = 3

Channel 5 = The office TV show = (Work life) = 3

Channel 6 = Modern Family = (Family life) = 2

Overview
(Repeat overview for yourself as to why you want your thoughts to be on these channels)

Example… I don’t want to be thinking too high on work life as it’s draining to have so many thoughts about just work. I’d rather place them in other thoughts “channels”

Make up your own channels and examples that relate to you and practise this exercise as often as you need to help you shifting your thoughts to start playing the good channels vs the bad ones.

If you want to turn your TV off and come join a meditation… lots available in the Yoga Tent in 2018
